Adware - What is it and How to Remove it

If your computer is suddenly plagued with pop-up ads, running really slow, or if your browser home page keeps changing, chances are you have adware installed on your computer.

Adware is usually included in downloaded software known as “freeware”. In exchange for getting free software, you agreed (whether you read the license agreement or not) to the installation of the included adware. Sometimes adware comes in email, with secret code embedded in graphics or in the HTML text. Just like spyware, adware installs very quickly, usually without your knowledge. Adware is not a virus, so antivirus software will never detect it.

Most adware today includes code that relays to the advertiser something about you. This lets marketers know which sites you visit on the internet, how much time you spend on each site, and what type of content you viewed. Most people consider adware to be an invasion of privacy. Adware that is delivered in the form of email often tells marketers when you opened the mail, how long you looked at it, and what you did with it.

Adware is sometimes hard to remove, and you really need special software for this. For the best anti-adware software, consider McAfee AntiSpyware, Spyware Doctor, Sunbelt Counter Spy, Adaware, Webroot Spy Sweeper, or eTrust Pest Patrol. These products remove adware and help keep your computer from getting more adware.
